How Does It Work ?

  • Recent pharmacology and clinical studies have shown that the Gymnemic acid is made up of molecules whose atom arrangement is similar to that of glucose molecule.
  • These molecules fill the receptor locations on the taste buds for a period of two to three hours, thereby preventing the taste buds from being activated by any sugar molecule present in food. The hypoglycemic action is gradual in nature, differing from the rapid effect of many prescriptions’ hypoglycemic drugs. Gudmar leaves raise insulin levels. The active ingredients act in the beta cells in pancreas which secrets insulin. It enhances beta cells division as well as insulin secretion. This insulin which secreted naturally in pancreases act on the blood sugar. It is found that even if there is substantial overdose of Gudmar it does not reduce the blood sugar as in case of many prescribed hypoglycemic drugs. Most of the prescribed hypoglycemic drugs act directly on blood sugar; in this case there is always a danger of drastic reduction in blood sugar. The leaves are also noted for lowering serum cholesterol and triglycerides. It has also been noted that Gudmar takes away the bitter taste of bitter substances, such as quinine, in such a way that it affects the sense of sweetness associated with candies and other sweet foods. However, it has no effect on pungent, salty, astringent or acidic taste.
